One Answer to “Why?”

As soon as I read this quote from the editor of Poetry magazine, I thought of Poems from the Battlefield and some of what I tried to express in my Afterword and in articles.  I could never say “it” the way the editor has, and most likely will never become someone whom millions read, so the least I can do is share his succinct wording–that perfect articulation of “why?” (and for my own use, “Why the battlefields?”)–that makes poetry so powerful and so appealing.

“Let us remember that in the end
we go to poetry for one reason,
so that we might more fully
inhabit our lives and the world
in which we live them, and that
if we more fully inhabit these
things, we might be less apt to
destroy both.”
