Perhaps this is needless to say, but the February 7 book signing was canceled due to the snow storm. I have to admit that between the blizzard and other responsibilities, I have neglected this beloved blog.
Prior to becoming derailed, I intended to point out the stark contrast between Dickinson’s poem on battle and Channing’s. Recall I was fairly critical of Channing for understating the horror of war in her poem “Any Woman to a Soldier.” Dickinson, however, while leaving us with the hope that God will keep all soldiers in “his” hands, memory and heart, does not sugar coat the way soldiers ‘drop’ and are often forgotten. I believe, therefore, that if we were to have a contest to decide which poet packed the most punch, Dickinson would win.
