Sheila School, Vice Chair of the Prince William Area League of Women Voters MAL Unit, will share her lifelong research on Louisa May Alcott, author of Little Women. Sheila’s chance discovery of Alcott’s first popular book Hospital Sketches led her to explore Alcott’s fascinating double and even triple life as a writer of sometimes preachy children’s books, serious books about work for women and tempestuous tales of love, princes, castles and gore, which Alcott wrote and published under a pseudonym.
Come hear how publishing Little Women, a book Alcott did not want to write, lifted her family out of abject poverty and how she struggled her whole life to please a brilliant but psychologically abusive father. Most of all, enjoy the opportunity to understand what it was like to be a spirited and intelligent woman in Civil War America.
On display will be books by women authors, including League members, and a 19th century period tea setting. Light refreshments will be served.
This event is open to the public.
