The book signing will begin at 2:00 pm on Sunday, June 8th at the Manassas

Battle of Big Bethel: Crucial Clash in Early Civil War Virginia is the first full-length treatment of the small but consequential June 10, 1861 battle that reshaped both Northern and Southern perceptions about what lay in store for the divided nation. In the spring of 1861, many people in the North and South imagined that the Civil War would be short and nearly bloodless. The first planned engagement of the war at Big Bethel, however, provided undeniable evidence of just how wrong popular opinion could be.

Author Edward L. Ayers stated: “The Battle of Big Bethel is a terrific book and I learned a lot. With excellent writing and remarkable research, the narrative evokes the scene at the beginning of the war in a very convincing way. Complete with powerful battle scenes, the authors do a wonderful job of describing the motivations and mindsets of both the U.S. and Confederate soldiers at the outset of the conflict and handle slavery very effectively throughout.”

J. Michael Cobb received a master’s in American Studies from the College of William and Mary, and is the founding curator of the Hampton History Museum. He is the author of Fort Wool: Star Spangled Banner Rising, as well as several published articles about the Civil War, and is the recipient of the Jefferson Davis award from the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Following his graduation from Arkansas State University, Edward B. Hicks worked more than three decades as a newspaper advertising executive. An avid Civil War enthusiast, he has edited and provided extensive research for several history publications, accomplished the bulk of the research for this volume, and is currently an assistant to the curator of the Hampton History Museum.

Wythe Holt received a J.D. and a Ph.D. in American history from the University of Virginia, and taught at The University of Alabama School of Law for 39 years, where he is University Research Professor of Law Emeritus. The author of several books, his articles have appeared in journals such as Labor History, Duke Law Journal, and Osgoode Hall Law Journal, and he has recently completed a legal history of the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794.
